After watching videos from each candidate, I noticed a major difference in their style - Obama says what he thinks about energy policy in a very direct way, while McCain turns the discussion into a choreographed political drama. The other difference is their perspective on how to best break our dependence on foreign oil. Obama thinks that the best way is to make alternative energy a more profitable industry by heavily taxing non-renewable sources and creating tax and other incentives for alternative energy industry development. McCain appears to have the view that the way to decrease dependence on foreign oil is to further exploit domestic sources of oil, and develop nuclear energy, while also tossing in a few incentives for alternative energy industry development. McCain's goal is to decrease dependence on FOREIGN oil, while Obama's goal is to decrease dependence on oil, period. Obama, in his speech, concedes that while he doesn't believe in offshore drilling, he is willing to add it to a mix of new solutions, if it means some of the new solutions are of his variety, and that is why he voted for the last big energy bill.
